Happy New Year! After being my last 'Brush' of 2001 on 1E61 the previous night, 47844 was also my first of 2002 on 1V39 the next morning. The loco waits at Bristol Temple Meads with the return 1E33 1210 to Newcastle (01/01/2002)
Unfortunately 47844 became the first casualty of the New Year when it collapsed at Derby, where 1E33 is pictured a couple of hours later. The train eventually went forward to Newcastle behind 47701 (01/01/2002)
47224 awaits its next turn of duty at Leeds Freightliner Terminal (15/01/2002)
47358 is pictured at Stourton the following day (16/01/2002)
A rare visitor to Stourton later that week was 47309 'European Rail Operator of the Year'. Fitted with additional sanding equipment, this loco was nominally dedicated to working over the Felixstowe branch (18/01/2002)
Appropriately-named 47789 'Lindisfarne' is seen at Newcastle on 'Thunderbird' duty for GNER (20/01/2002)
After working north from Birmingham that morning, 47844 waits to head back south with the SuO 1V68 1430 Newcastle-Bristol (20/01/2002)
Deputising for an unavailable HST, 47814 'Totnes Castle' is pictured at Newcastle with 1V55 1308 to Bristol Temple Meads (26/01/2002)
With the HST still out of traffic the, the 'vice' was back at Newcastle the following day, this time in the hands of 47851. The newly-named 'Traction Magazine' had worked the SuO 1E25 0920 from Derby (27/01/2002)
47851 had been repainted into two-tone green livery by Virgin Trains to mark the forthcoming displacement of their locomotives from Cross Country services. The loco is pictured at Newcastle with the return 1V64 1314 to Bristol (27/01/2002)
A fortnight later, 47814 'Totnes Castle' heads the SuO 1430 to Bristol Temple Meads at Newcastle (10/02/2002)
Covering the 'Thunderbird' turn at Newcastle was 47785 'Fiona Castle', one of the few members of the class to have been repainted into the EWS 'red and gold' house colours (11/02/2002)
Diversions over the 'S&C' were a feature of the early weekends of 2002. 47734 'Crewe Diesel Depot' is seen on arrival at Carlisle having worked 1S55 0710 Euston-Glasgow from Preston. 47790 is 'd.i.t' (16/02/2002)
47841 'Spirit of Chester' waits to work forward from Carlisle to Preston with the diverted 1M33 1350 Edinburgh-Birmingham (16/02/2002)
After working throughout from Bournemouth on 1S54 that morning, 47806 is pictured at Edinburgh with 1M04 1704 to Carlisle (16/02/2002)
47806 is pictured again a couple of hours later at Carlisle after working 1M04 1704 ex-Edinburgh (16/02/2002)
I could have gone to the pub with everyone else, but instead opted to try some nocturnal photography. Here's another look at 47806 at Carlisle after working 1M04 from Edinburgh - a turn which was booked for a '47' for the duration of the 'S&C diversions (16/02/2002)
Having run round, 47806 waits to work back north from Carlisle with 1S87 2010 to Glasgow Central (16/02/2002)
A never to be repeated scene at Carlisle: on the left, 47806 heads 1S87 2010 to Carlisle, whilst in the background 47851 has just arrived via the 'S&C' from Preston on 1S62 1230 Euston-Glasgow (16/02/2002)
The anticipated 47806 had transformed itself into 47790 when the masses descended on Glasgow Central the next morning for 1M64 1123 to London Euston. As a 'one-off' the train was today booked via the 'G&SW' route to Carlisle, as well as the 'S&C' (17/02/2002)
Having completed the first phase of it's journey south, 'Saint David/Dewi Sant' pauses at Carlisle with 1M64 1123 Glasgow-Euston. Unusually the '87' remained in the formation for the run over the 'S&C' to work the train forward from Preston (17/02/2002)
47843 'Vulcan' is pictured on arrival at Newcastle with 1E33 1207 from Bristol (23/02/2002)
'Vulcan' waits to return south with 1M67 1756 Newcastle-Birmingham (23/02/2002)
47846 'Thor' - another of the original Western Region 'named' batch - heads 1A60 1520 to London Paddington at Plymouth (24/02/2002)
